Granny corrects me when I ask if I can
Ride to the store in her sparkling new van.

Are you capableof lifting yourself onto the seat,
Or not getting the seat belt tangled around both your feet?
If you can do these it’s proper to say,
May I go with you, from my house today?

May means I’m able but I might not be permitted.
Can means I’m not sure if I can do it and don’t want to admit it.

Say "may" if you’re asking others for permission.
Say "can" if your not sure if you will achieve the condition.

May I?  Can I?
